Oakville

A guide to Oakville by neighbourhood — where each community sits, what the housing is like, and what is for sale in it right now.

Living in Oakville

Oakville sits on the north shore of Lake Ontario between Mississauga and Burlington, in Halton Region. More than 210,000 people live here (2021 Census). The older lakeshore villages have kept a small-town feel, while North Oakville, between Dundas Street and Highway 407, has grown quickly with new communities.

What draws most families is a combination that is hard to find elsewhere in the GTA: well-regarded public and Catholic schools, a waterfront with two harbours, a direct GO train to Union Station, and neighbourhoods with very different characters. That last point matters most when you are buying. Oakville is not one market; it is a set of distinct ones, and a home's value depends far more on the pocket it sits in than on any town-wide figure.

Oakville's Neighbourhoods

Each neighbourhood below has its own guide with homes for sale. For the full list, see our Oakville Neighbourhoods page.

Getting Around

Oakville has two GO stations on the Lakeshore West line — Oakville GO, near Trafalgar Road, and Bronte GO in the west end — both with direct trains to Union Station. Oakville Transit runs local bus routes, many of them feeding the GO stations. By car, the QEW runs through the town and Highway 407 crosses the north end, with Highway 403 connecting at the eastern edge toward Mississauga and Pearson Airport.

Schools

Two English-language boards serve Oakville: the Halton District School Board (public) and the Halton Catholic District School Board. French-language schools are run by Conseil scolaire Viamonde and Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir. Independent schools include Appleby College and St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School, and Sheridan College has its Trafalgar Road campus here.

Catchments are assigned by address and change as new schools open, especially in North Oakville, so confirm the boundary for a specific home before relying on it. Our Oakville Schools Guide has ratings and details for every school in town.

Parks, the Waterfront and Things to Do

Much of the lakeshore is public parkland, including Coronation Park, Lakeside Park and the harbours at Oakville and Bronte. Bronte Creek Provincial Park straddles the Oakville–Burlington border, and trails follow Sixteen Mile Creek north through the middle of town. Downtown Oakville, Kerr Village and Bronte Village are the main walkable shopping and dining streets. The Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts and Glen Abbey Golf Club, a long-time host of the Canadian Open, are local landmarks. Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, run by Halton Healthcare, serves the town from north-central Oakville.

Homes in Oakville

Housing ranges from 19th-century homes and lakefront estates in Old Oakville and Morrison, through the 1970s–90s subdivisions of Glen Abbey, River Oaks and Falgarwood, to new townhomes and detached homes in North Oakville. Condominiums are concentrated along the lake, in the downtown core and near the GO stations — see our Oakville Condominiums guide.

Prices vary more by neighbourhood and street than by any town-wide average, which is why this page does not quote one. For current figures, see the market updates on our blog, which are published monthly with dated, sourced data.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Oakville a good place to live?

For most families, yes. Oakville combines well-regarded public and Catholic schools, a largely public waterfront with two harbours, direct GO trains to Union Station and a wide range of neighbourhoods, from historic lakeside streets to brand-new communities in North Oakville.

What are the best neighbourhoods in Oakville?

It depends on what you want. For lakeside character, look at Old Oakville, Morrison (Eastlake) and Bronte. For established family neighbourhoods with well-regarded schools, Glen Abbey, River Oaks, West Oak Trails and Joshua Creek are the usual shortlist. For the newest homes, North Oakville.

How do you commute from Oakville to Toronto?

Most commuters take the GO train on the Lakeshore West line from Oakville GO or Bronte GO, which run directly to Union Station. By car, the QEW is the main route east, with Highway 407 as a toll alternative across the north.

Which school boards serve Oakville?

The Halton District School Board (public) and the Halton Catholic District School Board, with French-language schools run by Conseil scolaire Viamonde and Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir. Catchments are set by address, so confirm the boundary for the specific home.
